KAT CASTRO
Kat (she/they) is a Filipina-American interdisciplinary artist, embodiment practitioner, creative director and producer currently based in NJ. More importantly, she’s human. She has strong affinity in collaborating in experiential and multimedia productions. Grounded in the theme of kapwa (shared-self) and rooted in ancestral healing, her focus resonates in creating cared-for spaces that encourage introspection, vulnerability, and connection.
Kat’s creative spirit stems deeply from her inner child, endlessly exploring the fusion of mediums within and beyond movement, film, photography, and design. Growing up in an immigrant household, she naturally gravitated towards the arts, whether it was tinkering on the piano, shamelessly dancing for her grandparents, or capturing moments with her mom’s point-and-shoot cameras.
In the midst of pursuing and finishing her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at the University of Toronto, she rebelled against conformity, immersing herself into Toronto’s vibrant art and dance scenes. This opened doors for her to where she continues to build, strategize, and nurture growth in unison with local and global artists, brands, and non-profit organizations. She has worked on productions with Project Home, A Missing Peace Productions, Mad Ruk Entertainment, The Industry TO, HER Creative TO, and more. Using her art-forms as a means for activism, she aims to advocate for storytelling through a conscious socio-cultural lens.
Her recent piece UNDERTONES was recognized for Honorable Mention at Dare to Dance in Public and was officially selected worldwide in film festivals and programs such as F-O-R-M, 8-Count, VAEFF, and Fifth Wall Fest. She has also partaken in creations that have been featured and awarded at Inside Out, CineAsian, Homescreen, and more. She has also been a resident, bursary recipient, and participant of HXTAIT NYC, BLACK HXOUSE BIPoC Woman’s Program, Artscape Daniel's Launchpad, and ECRU Club.
Kat’s journey is an ongoing tapestry of exploration, compassion, and purpose-driven creativity, consistently seeking to reflect our bound threads of humanity. She is inspired to hold and be a part of environments where individuals can practice self-advocacy and explore the relation of their inner and external worlds.
